Merging my interest in cinema with my interest in Victorian whores, I am obliged to ask the question to you all - what is your personal favourite Victorian whore movie? And, as a slightly related question, who's played the best onscreen Ripper (Anthony Perkins in "Edge of Sanity" only *just* counts)?

I would very much like to know. Your answers would please me. I might give you grapes if I really like you.

I think From Hell has got to be my absolute favourite Victorian Whore movie. Sorry! I absolutely love that film although it bears virtually no resemblance to the book. The only bad thing is Heather Graham who is as unvictorian whore like as it is possible for anyone to be. The other actresses depicting whores were brilliant though.

I think the best onscreen ripper would have to be Ian Holm, if only for the bit when his eyes go completely black. The two murderers in Murder By Decree are nasty as well though.

Did you see that I won that books about Jack the Ripper films?

Now give me grapes. Or I will cut you.

I'll do better than that, my dear. I'll give you grapes, then I'll cut you... >;)

Eek, sorry, this icon is doing funny things to me!!

(Yes, I saw you won the book btw - might have to come and have a look at that soon! Looks ace!! :))

I agree Ian Holm was fantastic in "From Hell", definitely the best thing about the movie... I just have a problem with the direction in that movie. It's just too modern and flashy... It would've been so much nicer if shot a bit less showoffy. :/

I can just imagine you cackling maniacally at your keyboard right now. ;)

Book looks brilliant - they have a few on amazon, both new and used if you are interested? Will let you know what mine is like and hopefully we will be seeing you soon anyway! :)

Ian Holm was brilliant, although it is possible to be confused between his Gull Going Mad and also his Bilbo Going Mad in LOTR, which had a similar black eyed look iirc. I do love that film and I do like the direction - then again I adore Pluncket and Macleane which is directed on quite similar show offy lines.

I am indeed cackling.

I suspect Ian Holm's eyes are *actually* black when he gets angry. I'm about to take a marker pen to score myself some extra Ripper points...

It's a wonderful film. I think I've got the DVD somewhere *peers worriedly at the giant bookcase full of DVDs* and should really re-watch it.

I really like From Hell and totally agree about Heather Graham.

She's a crappy actress in pretty much everything, it's beyond me why they chose her to play the role of Mary Kelly.
